If you know how to take a great photograph and write a great auction listing then you are well placed to start making money online, but without knowing how to find a hot niche on eBay you will always struggle to maximise your earning potential. Fortunately there are a few simple steps that you can take to help you along your way to knowing exactly what to sell on the world's favourite auction website.
Competition vs. Sales
Before jumping on the bandwagon of the top ten selling items on eBay, it is important to understand the principle of competition vs. sales. You may be able to sell a lot of items in highly popular niche markets, but if the level of competition is too high you might struggle to compete with the prices that other providers can offer, as well as to drive enough traffic to your own auctions to make enough sales to survive.
Understanding this principle will help you to delve a little deeper than the bestselling list provided by eBay where most new eBay sellers stop. This is one of the predominant keys to helping you to find a hot niche on eBay.
Brand name clothing and iPhones or other top selling gadgets may bring in the bucks for the big sellers on eBay, but you should seriously consider your competition before jumping into that arena. This is really quite easy to do as you have access to all of the auctions currently listed on eBay. Simply have a look around and see how many other sellers are operating in the areas that you may have considered, as well as how much money they are making per auction and how many of their auctions are left unsold.
Your own Hot Niche on eBay
Hopefully you should have a better idea of which areas of the market to avoid now that you've had a look around eBay at the competition. That doesn't necessarily help you though, as now you need to find your own niche where you can make significant sales for great profits in areas of relatively low competition.
Fortunately there are a few tools that can really help you out here:
- eBay Pulse - eBay actually provides a tool that will show you the top ten items in any category that people are searching for. This isn't useful for the initial list of categories as these are certainly the areas with the most competition, but by drilling down into sub-categories there are many great observations to be made as to potential niche markets.
- Amazon - eBay isn't the only website that offers lists of bestselling items; other retail giants such as Amazon do likewise. This can be incredibly useful as if sales of an item are high on Amazon then people are likely to be looking for the same sort of products on eBay.
- Google keyword tool - Google is, without doubt, the most popular search engine and their keyword tools provide you with the ability to see what people are looking for. Spend some time with this handy feature of Google and before long you will start to notice some items that a respectable number of people search for each and every month.
Researching the best niche markets on eBay will take some time, but by taking advantage of these tools you will be well placed to discover exactly what to sell to make the most money.
